Eco Couture – Buy Local, Save the Economy and The Planet

Wear Your Values

Coco Chanel once said “Fashion is not something that exists only in dresses. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

At the end of its journey clothing and fabric scrap takes up a huge amount of landfill. Add to that the environmental costs of packaging, transport, color dying, printing, and laundry and it creates a dangerous and enormous carbon footprint. This is the reason fashion designed with recycled materials comes as a welcome new fashion trend. There are countless ways to reduce your fashion carbon footprint and rebuild the economy. The choice is ours to support local designers and in turn save the planet and create jobs.

“Several studies have shown that buying from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community and creating jobs. Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our communities, provide the most jobs to residents.“ Source: sconnect.org

RecycledForDancing.com designs by Deborah Paulino are collectable works of art that show the nature of transformation, and draw attention to the human connection to one another and the environment. Combined are an array of fabrics from different eras and areas of the world that are either surplus, recycled or vintage.

The reconstruction process starts with hand washing the fabrics in oxygen bleach, then looking at the fabric, shape, color, then sketching out a design. Often several pieces are used to make one piece of clothing and it can take time, sometimes weeks searching through thrift shops, to find the right elements that compliment each other. Once all the elements are in place the construction takes place, then fittings and finishing touches - sometimes tailoring alterations, other times embellishments such as beading, appliqué, or distressing. When the garment is finished and ready for retail, it is then steam cleaned for any leftover dust and allergens and de-wrinkle and refresh the fabric. The results are one of a kind sincere works of art that are well-made, timeless, and fun to wear.
Eco Couture

Hi, I'm seeking like minds.

I grew up designing and making my own clothes since a little girl, and apprenticed with Mirage in Melbourne, Australia’s largest CMT house for major Oz designers; before studying fine art at Heatherleys in London. I was also sponsored by Mirage and a runner-up in the Australian Fashion Awards. Then I traveled and lived in a few different countries and got into planet activism and events, then running an online arts community, then helping manage festivals. Now current fashion has caught up with the designs in my head and the ideals in my heart and I recently returned to designing wearable art.

The stuff I’m now designing and reconstructing are Eco Couture, individual one-off’s made from recycled and vintage fabrics. My design skills are coming back and improving with each collection batch. Sketches and photos of recent experiments are up at http://www.recycledfordancing.com plus I already have clothes in 2 boutiques, addresses are on the site under Retail Stores.

I also do custom stage gear, before working on festivals full time I actually did costumes for Music TV dancers, musicians, and theatre. I had a few designs on national TV way back when, on long running music TV show called Countdown. And I designed costumes for a whole Bertolt Brecht play at the Chelsea Playhouse in London, plus whole wardrobes for nightclub dancers and contemporary cabaret.

My current designs are inspired by San Francisco and Japanese street fashion, as well as European Couture and Burning Man. For me it is sculpture using textiles with a wearable framework and chaos, I take something that I see and mix it with something else that I see, each piece inspiring the next piece. Anyway take a peek at http://www.recycledfordancing.com for art’s sake, and keep me in mind when you are thinking of new additions to your wardrobe or recycling your wardrobe.

Thank you for being here.

What's your best find?

I don't know about any of you, but I can't afford to buy couture fashion at original prices. I do, however, sometimes snag certain Objects Of Desire at incredible discounts -- usually, of course, a season after their debut.

Here's my absolute best find: I was desperately in love with an Alexander McQueen jacket one year (if anyone recalls, it was the spring collection based on a shipreck/pirate theme, maybe 2003). Fast forward to me in the Barney's outlet the following December, where I discover a single example of The Jacket, my size, at about 85% off. Candidly, it was still a splurge, but worth every cent!

Anyone have other triumphs to share?

I went to this show last month - www.vam.ac.uk/couture - and while I found some of the suits frumpy, I guess that was the style for many back then. Ive seen a few of these garments already but I was happy to be able to see the construction of some of these garments up close and personal. Frumpy or no, the tailoring and detail was insane. These garments are padded and constructed like armor - they would have to be! Go see the exhibit if you get a chance to get to London. The Theatre de la Mode dolls are fabulous. A couple evening dresses by John Galliano are displayed at the end. Yum!

oh, the ever-delightful john galliano, pure genius of the chrisitan dior haute couture show 10-year anniversary

http://www.showstudio.com/blog/20573

In this exclusive film for SHOWstudio, John Galliano lets us in on how he really makes his fashions. With Morgane Dubled starring as la merveilleuse ingénue and Monsieur Galliano as the eponymous mauvais garcon, witness the creative process of the atelier in all its histrionic glory before the showing of his A/W ’07 collection. Doctored with cigarette burns and jaundiced film reel for a straight-from-the-archive-shelf charm, this self-effacing film re-enacts the common mythologies that enshroud the figure of the fashion designer: as a fastidious creator of clothing and fantasy. Toying with many of these received ideas, the film is made in the parodic style that M. Galliano does better than anyone else.

for the real couture geeks out there.........

here's a pattern to play with
only for the incredibly stubborn and determined
or the mad........ enjoy!!!

http://www.showstudio.com/projects/unf/unf_start.html

here's a description of the piece and more from the showstudio website :

~~~~~
Galliano's Pirate jacket appeared in his Autumn/Winter 2001 collection. In that context the jacket bespoke historical heroines like pirate Ann Bonney, Delacroix's draped allegorical figure in 'Liberty Leading the People' and the re-cyclical nature of rebel clothing. It was resonant of post-battle euphoria, with the flag torn off a captured ship and hijacked as clothing, held together with sail rivets and ties. The jacket brought gritty imagery to the catwalk, in strong contrast to some of Galliano's more romantic visions. Today, represented on SHOWstudio, the jacket exists alone as a complicated and symbolic piece of corseting and tailoring.
It would be easy to be distracted by Galliano's use of the Union Jack, to dismiss it as a piece of nationalistic flag-waving. There are many clues in his earlier work, however, which suggest that he would never be quite so obvious in his use of source material. The A/W 2001 collection was infused with references to the kind of renegade historical groups that have stimulated Galliano's muse since his graduate collection in 1983: Les Incroyables. And even when Galliano's designs are seemingly couched in the language of high fashion and bourgeois taste, they always have something else about them, an edge, that is drawn from the underground, the street or historical sources.
The very use of the title 'Pirate Jacket' is connotative of Galliano's approach to plundering historical detailing and silhouettes, evident in all his work. If you have experience of pattern cutting and dressmaking, or have studied historical fashion in any detail, then Galliano's work speaks to you on a level beyond the purely visual. Galliano is often at his most creative when he divulges his references through the medium of tailoring. There is a real pleasure in mentally deconstructing his work, in tracing how a certain sleeve was achieved and whence a drape originates.
Tailoring and corsetry are historic and subtle arts. To be truly innovative with them the designer must have an idea of exactly what can be achieved creatively, whilst simultaneously considering that the garment must work as practical clothing. The Pirate jacket is deceptively unconstructed, a union jack appears to both wrap and support the body but simultaneously to unfurl upon it. The jacket turns traditional tailoring and corseting around and inside out, to re-present it in a modern idiom.
There is a seeming contradiction in Galliano's Pirate jacket - a complicated fashion puzzle - being made available to the home dressmaker. Designer dressmaking patterns are available to buy but even the 'advanced' ones do not present the challenge to a dressmaker's skills that this project does. For a dressmaker, downloading this pattern and rebuilding the jacket excites in a visceral way. The myriad pieces and complicated construction provide an opportunity to get inside the garment and the mind of the designer - to grow the piece on a mannequin or on the body - that is incredibly holistic. The making of this jacket should be as important as the wearing of it.
what sewing machine do you recommend?
I have a lovely serger but alas I need a proper machine. Since I am going to buy one I would like it to have a few newer features.
easy to use and dependable
A variety of stiches
computerized
able to power through thin leather with the right needle
easy to thread
powerful
wont choke up on light and frilly fabric
buttonhole function that works
automaticly adjusts tension
various needle positions
will stop with needle down
I don't have alot of knowledge about different brands or models. I also don't want to spend like a thousand on the thing. I have been checking on e-bay and there is so much to choose from. HELP...
What do you have or wish you have?
Are you selling a quality machine?
THANK YOU!!!!
Madonna in W -- Gorgeous Photo Essay
Hi all ...
I'm new here, and see that this tribe has not had a lot of activity lately. Thought I'd just throw this out:
http://www.style.com/w
W Magazine's site, where they might still have some of the luscious photos posted from the recent issue of fashion spead (48 pages!) w/Madonna wearing Jean Paul Gaultier, Rochas, and various other absolutely gorgeous items ... but really, the focus is not on Madge per se but on the artfulness of the composition, the horses, how she relates to them, and the clothes ... the hats, gloves, boots, riding crop ...
It's just really quite an eye-popping, mind-glazing bit of artistry there in that publication. I've been eyeing it for weeks every time I visit Barnes & Noble and decided to part with $4.50 of my working girl paycheck today. It was the wisest $4.50 I will spend, I'm sure, this week. No other fistful of dollars will bring me as much guilty pleasure as this oversized sister-to-Vogue publication!
Haute couture? Maybe not. But I'm hoping it gets things jumping here again.
Anybody out there ? ...
Fashion Show
looking for clothing designers who are going to Burningman this year, who would like to submit a small collection for a fashion show at Burningman. Any designers, who wish to participate, will be expected to attend all meetings during the summer, have ideas/sketches and garments due at proposed dates, and be willing to help out before/during/ and after the show. Example: finding models, creative ideas in terms of choreography and music, set up/clean up and distributing flyers, finding volunteers to do make up ect. We have the space/camp. The theme will be that of this years burn, but with our own creative interest. The ideal time of the show will be later in the week during the mid afternoon (so we have natural lighting, less to worry about) but will not be a guarantee until enough designers have agreed to take on this project. Email me with any questions.
Thank you
My dad runs a non profit called "www.atouchoflove.org" They help poor people all over the world. They just helped a small village in Ghana open a textile plant and I need to find Fashion templates AKA Tech Pack. They can be on anything shirts or skirts or jackets. Anything that will help them to design clothes. Do you know a place (community) where I can get Tech packs in the fashion industry? Your help would be greatly appreciated. If you don't know do you have any friends here on tribe that can help me? Maybe you know of a tribe where people in the fashion world share technical info. Im looking for templates in PDF format or in Illistrator. Any help would be so cool. If I can ever do anything for you please ask. I run a hip hop record label here in New York City. I live in The lower east side. If you need any great music just hollar.
Kindest regards,
I need some info about designer Pascal Humbert. All I know atm is that he's french, 35-ish and at the start of his career for example made fantastic poplin shirts with oversized collars and spiraling buttons.
What I want to know is where he is today? I heard something about an italian company backing him up after a collection?
Does anyone know anything?
Love,
M
